SEO pricing, explained honestly.

Why does real SEO cost hundreds a month when someone just offered you a $99 SEO package? Here's exactly where the money goes, so no price tag on my pricing page catches you off guard.

The short answer

Legitimate local SEO in the US is usually priced as a monthly retainer, and the range is wide: a few hundred dollars a month for a single-location business in a smaller town, up into the thousands for multi-location or big-metro campaigns. What changes the price isn't magic. It's how much skilled work is needed to beat your competitors in the places you want to rank.

Here's how my own plans line up:

  • 1-Page Micro-Site, $89/mo: a custom single-page site with hosting, SSL, daily backups, and 1 basic content update per month. Technical SEO is included. Ongoing Map Pack work is not.
  • 6-page monthly plan, $189/mo: a custom 6-page site with hosting, unlimited content edits, lifetime website updates, and priority support.
  • Single-Market Growth, from $499/mo: the 6-page site plus one Google Business Profile, twice-monthly posts, review capture, and visual Google Maps ranking reports. SEO Only, if you already have a site: $450/mo.
  • Multi-City Fleet, from $899/mo: everything in Single-Market, plus one new location page a month, weekly Google Business Profile posts (4/month), Q&A, review replies, and suburb pages. SEO Only: $799/mo.
  • Commercial Metro, from $1650/mo: everything in Multi-City, plus an advanced build, up to two Google Business Profiles (+$350/mo per extra profile), and up to two new location pages a month. SEO Only: $1,500/mo.
  • Traditional Lump Sum Build: $999 for a 1-page micro-site, $3,500 for a 6-page site, or $5,000+ for custom architecture, each plus $30/mo managed hosting. You own the website when the final payment clears.

Full details are on the pricing and packages page. The rest of this guide explains why those numbers are what they are.

Contract vs lump sum

The $89/mo, $189/mo, and Website + SEO Bundle plans (from $499/mo, $899/mo, and $1650/mo) are a 12-month initial agreement, then month-to-month. Hosting, backups, and edits stay active while the subscription is active. SEO Only on a site you already have has no long-term lock-in.

Prefer no contract? Lump-sum builds are $999 for a 1-page micro-site and $3,500for a 6-page site, plus $30/mo hosting. You own the website when the final payment clears. Unlimited edits are included on the $189/mo plan and the Website + SEO Bundle. The 1-page monthly plan includes 1 basic content update per month. On a lump-sum build, unlimited edits are $50/mo or $150/hr. Both options are on the pricing page, and the architecture those prices buy is thezero-bloat custom build compared with page builders. If the site you already have is fine and you only need hosting and speed work, WordPress hardening starts at $99/mo. Rankings work on that site starts at $450/mo.

Why real SEO costs real money

SEO is labor. Not software, not a button, not a plugin. Every month, someone with real skills has to actually do the work. Here's a sample of what that looks like:

  • Google Business Profile management: updating services, photos, and hours, answering questions, responding to reviews, and publishing posts every week.
  • Location pages: researching each town, writing genuinely unique content for it, and building the page so it doesn't look like a copy-paste of the last one. Google filters out duplicate city pages.
  • Visual geo-grid rank tracking: multi-point map-pack scans that show where you actually rank in each town, not a single check from the office.
  • Review generation: setting up a simple system so happy customers actually leave reviews, and keeping it running.
  • Technical monitoring: watching Search Console for errors, keeping speed fast, and fixing what breaks.
  • Competitor research: figuring out why the business above you ranks there, and closing the gap.

Add up the hours and you'll see why a bargain SEO package can't include any of that done properly. The only way those offers make money is automation, and automation is exactly what Google is good at ignoring.

Where the money goes, plan by plan

6-page monthly plan ($189/mo) and 1-Page Micro-Site ($89/mo)

Most of the value here is the site itself and the technical foundation underneath it: a custom-engineered, zero-bloat custom build that loads fast, schema that tells Google what you do, a clean sitemap, and managed hosting. The $189/mo plan includes unlimited edits. The 1-page micro-site includes 1 basic content update per month. There's no upfront build fee, so the cost of building the site is spread across the monthly price. These plans do not include ongoing Google Business Profile management or map ranking reports. They're the right fit if you mainly need to look legit and be technically sound.

Single-Market Growth (from $499/mo)

This is the first plan that pays for ongoing local SEO labor: one Google Business Profile, twice-monthly posts, a review-capture setup, on-page SEO, and visual Google Maps ranking reports, on top of a 6-page site. If you already have a site, the same work starts at $450/mo.

Multi-City Fleet (from $899/mo)

The jump from a single town is more labor: one new location page a month, weekly Google Business Profile posts (4 a month), Q&A monitoring, review replies, and dedicated suburb pages. This is where most contractors covering several towns land, because ranking outside your home town requires dedicated pages and an active profile. SEO only, on a site you already have, starts at $799/mo.

Commercial Metro (from $1650/mo)

This is the plan that surprises people, so here's the honest breakdown. Competing across a metro means up to two Google Business Profiles, with each extra profile at $350/mo, up to two new location pages a month, and active tracking across high-competition metro areas. That's a serious amount of skilled work every month. Agencies routinely charge more for the same scope. The difference here is you get the engineer directly, without paying for a sales team and account managers on top. SEO only starts at $1,500/mo.

Already have a site you like? SEO-only growth programs run that work on WordPress, Wix, or Squarespace, without a new build. Hosting and speed hardening, with no SEO retainer, starts at $99/mo.

Is it worth it? Do the math

Here's a simple way to think about it. This is an illustration, not a promise: plug in your own numbers.

  • Say an average job for your business is worth $500 in profit.
  • On Single-Market Growth at $499/mo, one extra job a month covers it.
  • On Multi-City Fleet at $899/mo, it's two extra jobs a month.
  • On Commercial Metro at $1650/mo, it's about four extra jobs a month, or two larger commercial jobs.

For most trades, the question isn't whether SEO can bring in one or two extra jobs a month once it's working. It's whether you can wait the few months it takes to build. If you can't, start smaller, or pair SEO with a short ad campaign while it ramps up.

SEO vs. paying for ads

Google Ads and Local Service Ads put you at the top immediately, and they can make sense. But every click or lead costs money, and in competitive trades that cost can be steep. The moment you stop paying, the calls stop.

SEO is the opposite: slower to start, but the rankings you earn keep producing calls without a per-click charge. Think of ads as renting and SEO as owning. Most local businesses do best owning the foundation and renting only when they need a short-term boost.

Red flags in cheap SEO

  • Guaranteed rankings. Nobody controls Google. A guarantee means they don't understand SEO or don't care.
  • A PDF and nothing else. If the month has no profile posts, no city pages, and no geo-grid, you paid for a chart.
  • Reports with no work behind them. If you can't see exactly what was done this month, assume nothing was.
  • They own your Google Business Profile. You should always be the owner. If they leave, your profile should stay with you.
  • Copy-paste city pages. Swapping the town name on identical pages is exactly what Google's duplicate content filters catch.
  • No one technical. If the person selling SEO can't explain how your site loads or how Google crawls it, who's doing the work?

If your budget is tight

I'd rather help you with something that fits than lose you to someone who'll take your money and disappear. Options:

  • Start on the 1-Page Micro-Site at $89/mo, or the 6-page monthly plan at $189/mo, both with $0 down, and upgrade later.
  • Keep your current site and use a standalone SEO program from $450/mo, or WordPress hardening from $99/mo if you only need the site secured and sped up.
  • Go with a one-time build and handle your own Google profile with a little guidance.
  • Call or text me and I'll give you an honest, helpful quote.

FAQ

Straight answers.

How much should a small business spend on local SEO?

It depends on how competitive your market is and how many towns you want to rank in. A single-town business can often get solid results from a foundation-level plan. A business covering a whole metro area or multiple locations needs more ongoing work, and that costs more. The right budget is one where a few extra jobs a month clearly pays for it.

Why are some SEO companies so cheap?

Because they automate everything: canned reports and auto-generated content. It looks like activity, but it rarely moves rankings, and some of it can get your Google Business Profile flagged. Real SEO is skilled labor, and skilled labor costs money.

Do you do social media marketing or buy Facebook leads?

No. We build permanent organic infrastructure. Social media leads stop the second you stop paying Mark Zuckerberg. We build assets that pay off long-term.

Do you run Google Ads (PPC)?

Yes, but we will likely tell you "No" until your website's foundation is fixed. Sending paid traffic to a slow, broken website is burning money. We fix the architecture first so your ads actually convert.

Can I start small and upgrade later?

Yes. Many businesses start on the $189/mo 6-page plan to get a fast, technically sound site, then move to Multi-City Fleet once they're ready to rank in more towns.
